My opinion on buying jewelry on the Internet

In this article, I will talk about buying jewelry on the Internet. This is something you may or may not have tried, but there are many reasons you should consider shopping for jewelry online.

I'll be the first to admit that jewelry is highly personal, and what you buy is often dependent upon what outfits you will use the jewelry on. A piece that will appeal to a certain person's wardrobe may be wildly inappropriate for the wardrobe belonging to somebody else. For this reason, many have avoided buying jewelry online for many years, preferring to make purchases in person.

But there are certain benefits to buying jewelry online which makes me believe that with the technology available today, buying online may be the superior option. I will outline some of the benefits below.

Firstly, buying jewelry online opens up the door to a much wider selection of products. Even if you go to a large brick and mortar jewelry store, your selection will be limited to maybe a thousand different products. Such is not the case online. On the Internet, your access to jewelry is virtually unlimited. Therefore, you will be much more likely to find a design that suits your fancy.

Second, the online world is a much better place to find custom, hand-made products. Sites like Etsy and Ebay make it very easy for you to find great, custom, unique pieces that you won't be able to find at most jewelry stores. In today's world, it is becoming increasingly difficult to assert your personality and uniqueness. Perhaps that is the reason why sites like Etsy have become so wildly popular.

And finally, buying jewelry online usually means you will end up getting a much better deal. This is because you can compare prices much more easily and find the lowest priced vendor, usually in a matter of minutes. In addition, many jewelry stores offer coupon codes that you can get online. Such discount codes often entitle you to steep discounts, free shipping, and free gifts.

With all that being said, buying online does offer disadvantages as well. The most obvious one is that you cannot inspect the product in-person. This is somewhat mitigated by the fact that many vendors offer HD images as well as 360 images you can view online. But that doesn't change the fact that once you receive the item, it may not live up to your expectations. The good thing is that in almost all cases, you will be able to return a product you are not satisfied with. Although you do need to cover return shipping, the fact that you can return items for up to a month or more should give you some peace of mind when you are purchasing jewelry online.

So which stores should you buy from? As I already mentioned, Etsy and Ebay are good choices for unique or used items. For new jewelry, I like Blue Nile and Ross Simmons myself. But to be fair, there are literally hundreds of stores you could buy from. On the whole, I recommend avoiding the smaller stores so you don't end up giving your money to an unknown store. It also might be a good idea to read reviews of jewelry stores online, so you get a feel for which stores regularly provide a satisfactory buying experience for the buyer.

There is a lot of information you need to know if you want to become a knowledgeable buyer of jewelry. Thankfully, there are plenty of resources online that help you learn more about jewelry. If you are a visually oriented person, Youtube is one great place where you can watch a lot of great videos that explain things such as diamonds, rings, and gold. The video below, from Business Insider, does a good job of explaining how to select a diamond:

In addition, there are quite a few websites dedicated to educating customers about jewelry. Blue Nile, for example, has extensive pages devoted to education. Wikipedia is also a wonderful source of information that should not be overlooked. You don't have to become an expert on jewelry in order to make intelligent purchases. However, the more knowledge you have, the better. Keep in mind, when you purchase online, you don't have the benefit of being able to talk to a salesperson. So it's up to you to do your homework and carefully research the items you are thinking of buying. This is particularly important if you are buying high-priced items.

As you can tell, buying jewelry online can be very rewarding. As long as you do your research and buy from reputable merchants, you should have a great experience shopping for jewerly on the Internet.
